Our times tables focus this week will be the 12 times table (up to 12 x 12) and including division facts.

Practise counting forwards, backwards, starting from zero and then starting from a multiple, and don’t forget the traditional way to support your child: a couple of mock tests to see how well your child knows their tables!

This week’s homework is Talk Time and is due on Thursday 01 February

Word meanings

From a page of our class novel, we’d like children to identify at least five words with unfamiliar meanings. At home, discuss the likely meanings of the words, and talk about the strategies they used to get these meanings. Can your child include the words in conversations at home? (Can you?!)

Children will have a copy of the page in their homework books.

In school today, we had a visit from the NSPCC. There was a KS1 and a KS2 assembly which promoted awareness about how to stay safe. (Check out the 15 January news article, Pants! The NSPCC safeguarding campaign, for some support at home.)

Next week, our Living and Learning statement of the week is ‘I am aware of risks’.

To support both of these things, this week’s homework task is a whole-school Talk Time homework:

I am aware of risks.

Talk with your child about risks. You might want to talk about:

  • risks at home, at school and in lots of other places – can your child consider risks in different situations?
  • weighing up risks – some risks (like putting your hand up to answer a question) is a safe risk as the worst that can happen is you might get the answer wrong; other risks are more dangerous – can you think of some more examples of safe and unsafe risks?
  • risks to physical health (such as smoking), risks to mental health (such as stress) – can your child think about other examples?
  • …and anything else that comes up!

Our times tables focus this week will be the 8 times table (up to 8 x 12) and including division facts.

Practise counting forwards, backwards, starting from zero and then starting from a multiple, and don’t forget the traditional way to support your child: a couple of mock tests to see how well your child knows their tables!

Homework for the whole school this week is Creative.

I can show what I know and think about something cultural.

We’d like children to present their responses about:

  • a recent book they’ve read
  • film they’ve watched
  • piece of art they’ve looked at
  • piece of music they’ve listened to – anything cultural in fact

We’re interested to read some sort of description (a summary, for example) and then your child’s opinions.

This review might include pictures, an interview (your child could write a fictional script between himself/herself and the artist, for example), a letter (eg to or from a character, or perhaps even the author) – anything which might include your child’s responses!

This week’s homework is Creative.

To research a naturalist (e.g. David Attenborough).

A naturalist is an expert in natural history. In preparation for our big topic Life Forces, we would like you to research a naturalist of your choice. From this research, create a summary of your chosen person. You can present your summary in any way you choose. For example, you might create a leaflet, an encyclopaedia entry or an article for a magazine about this person’s work. We will share these presentations in our homework session.

Our times tables focus will be the 9 times table (up to 12 x) and including division facts.

Practise counting forwards, backwards, starting from zero and then starting from a multiple, and don’t forget the traditional way to support your child: a couple of mock tests to see how well your child knows their tables! Make the link between other facts that belong to this family. For example, 3 x 9 = 27 and so 3 x 90 will be 270.

It’s Christmas!

We hope you all enjoy a well-deserved break and come back to school ready and fresh to learn on 02 January.

As it’s the holidays, there’s no homework this week but there’s a few things we think you should try and do over the festive break:

  • spend time with family
  • spend time with friends
  • play outside
  • throw a snowball
  • build a snowman
  • read a book, or two (or three)
  • do something nice for your parents or carers
  • spend some time relaxing and being mindful – remember our workshop?
  • investigate something you observe
  • be polite to everyone you meet
  • eat a few treats (and plenty of veggies!)
  • and, last but not least, have a generally awesome two weeks

This week’s homework is Creative.

I can show what I know about a festival.

Around this time, many children in school will celebrate or will have celebrated a religious festival of some sort.  This might be the Christian festival of Christmas (of course, celebrated by many non-Christians in the UK, too). It might also be the Sikh and Hindu festival Diwali,  the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, or the Chinese New Year festival – which is early in the new year. There are lots of other festivals and celebrations which you and your child might want to reflect on. Research more festivals.

We invite children to respond to the sentence above – they might include a recount (like a diary entry), pictures, or an interview (perhaps in a script). Your child might also choose to research a completely unknown festival or they might even think about creating a brand new festival, one that everyone will celebrate.

Homework this week is Practice makes Perfect. In Year 6, we’ve been learning about fractions, and in Year 5, we’ve been learning about area and perimeter. This homework will help your child practise what they have been learning in class. Please complete the worksheet in your book.

Our times tables focus will be the 4 and the 8 times table (up to 12 x) and including division facts.

Practise counting forwards, backwards, starting from zero and then starting from a multiple, and don’t forget the traditional way to support your child: a couple of mock tests to see how well your child knows their tables! Make the link between the two tables: x8 is double x4. For example, 6 x 4 = 24 and so 6 x 8 will be double that – 48.

Homework this week is Creative.

I know what community is.

Following our Community themed week, you could show what you have learnt about community. This could include ideas about who you are, school, family, village, city, national or international communities.
