Year 1 & 2 Class News

Life Forces

Posted on Sunday 21 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

We began our Life Forces big topic this week. Each class has talked about what they would like to find out. There were some very insightful questions including, “How to zebras get their stripes?”

We are looking forward to answering the questions and the children are particularly excited about all the Science this will involve. The BBC Bitesize website has some excellent resources that we’ll be using to support our learning.

Maths, NSPCC and Golden Stars

Posted on Sunday 21 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

We’ve been continuing our addition and subtraction focus in maths. There are some examples below of how children use concrete resources and pictorial representations in their books. The Top Marks website is great for fun ways to work on maths skills at home and we particularly like Hit the Button to help with rapid recall of maths facts.

The children listened and contributed well during the visit from the NSPCC with their mascot, Buddy. They told us all about the Speak Out Stay Safe campaign. Ask your child what they learnt.

We also learnt about how there is always someone to talk to at Childline and were shown how to remember the number, 0800 1111, using our hands.

Well done to our Golden Stars from the last two weeks.

Scholes Pool – one year on…

Posted on Wednesday 10 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

A year ago today, Save Scholes Pool won £10,000 from the Aviva Community fund to reach the target to start work on the pool. Now the pool is being used by over 130 children from Scholes Primary during the afternoons and a variety of children, including babies, in the mornings, evenings and weekends.

Children in school have made superb progress with the help of our swimming instructor, Nicole. Check out the videos showing children swimming under water and demonstrating excellent breast stroke legs.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to getting the pool back up and running!

SATs Information Evening – 09 January 2018

Posted on Wednesday 10 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our Key Stage 1 SATs information evening. The presentation can be found here for those who were unable to attend.

We also talked about a useful guide to the tests on You Tube.

Other useful information can be found on this website. A guide to phonics, addition facts guide and calculations can be found by following the links above or looking in the Learn More section.

Dinosaur Stomp

Posted on Friday 05 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

Each class has been working hard to achieve their 30 active minutes during the school day. Remember the challenge includes weekends – but all 60 minutes have to be done at home! Have a look at the Change for Life ideas or sign up to Go Noodle at home for fun ideas to keep active.

We used the end of Golden Assembly to do the Dinosaur Stomp (from Go Noodle) and a jungle animal dance to complete our 30 active minutes today. It was a great way to round off our week!

Let’s Get Active!

Posted on Thursday 04 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

As part of our commitment to being a happy and healthy school, we’re continually looking at ways to increase the physical activity undertaken within school. The UK Chief Medical Officers found that, “the latest evidence shows there is a clear link between physical activity and chronic disease.” We want to reduce this risk by ensuring that our children can achieve the recommended 60 minutes, or more, of physical activity per day. The government wants schools to provide 30 minutes of this.

In response to this we have launched the  30:30 Wristband Challenge.
Y1-6 children should have brought a recording sheet home. We’ll be taking part in the challenge in school and are encouraging children to continue this at home as well. We already do 10 minutes of Wake Up, Shake Up per day (join in here). We are now striving for 10 minutes of running per day and a further 10 minutes using interactive online resources. The Change for Life website has fun ideas how you can achieve 30 active minutes at home, too.

Movie Makers

Posted on Wednesday 03 January 2018 by Mrs Latham

We learnt so much reading Naughty Bus last half term: retelling the story orally and with props, writing it, writing our own naughty vehicle stories and making movies! We really enjoyed thinking of naughty ideas and using iPads to capture images to make videos in iMovie.

Spring Term Learning

Posted on Tuesday 12 December 2017 by Mrs Latham

‘What’s the matter?’ is our first mini-topic in the new year and is science-based. Children will learn about materials and their properties. We will explore what objects are made from and why, using One Snowy Night as a stimulus. We’ll be designing and making a waterproof shelter for an animal. You can help your child learn more about this topic when choosing which clothes to wear and talking about which materials everyday objects are made from and why.  Children will also ask ‘What’s the matter?’ from a social and emotional point of view, thinking about how they can solve problems.

Life forces  is our big topic for the new year (lasting eight weeks).
Life is all around us, in plants and animals, and comes in all shapes and sizes – it’s amazing! In this biology-based topic, we find out how our body works, what all living things have in common and the differences we might notice. Amongst other things, we’ll think about why animals choose particular habitats, and why a healthy diet is important and how drugs can be dangerous. Help your child at home by naming body parts, including the parts inside that you can’t see, discussing why you breathe hard after exercise and what plants you can see when you’re out and about.

Story with Santa and Golden Star

Posted on Friday 08 December 2017 by Mrs Latham

We enjoyed our second meeting with Santa this week. Year 1 and 2 experienced a story with Santa and each received a present. Thank you to FOSP for organising this. The grotto looked amazing!

Well done to our Golden Star this week.

Steam Train and Santa!

Posted on Friday 08 December 2017 by Mrs Latham

We had a fabulous time at Middleton Railway this week. All the children were a fantastic advert for our school. We learnt about fireboxes, pistons and crankshafts. Ask you child how a steam train works!
