Junior Leadership Team
Last week saw that time of year again where we say goodbye to the current JLT members and we elect new ones. This year, the team have been great and these will be tough shoes to fill. On Wednesday, each class listened to speeches from the children wishing to be elected. There were some great speeches that allowed the children to express their strengths and their wishes should they be elected. Thursday saw a nail-biting day of voting!
In assembly on Friday, the new team was announced and the new members received their JLT badges.
The new team are:
5,6A – Emilia
5,6B Noah
5,6C Eric
3,4A Thea
3,4B – Caleb
3,4C – Lani
2C – Jenson
1,2B – Olivia
1A – Mia
Spooktastic Halloween Disco
The FOSP Halloween disco was a hit with the children tonight (especially the sweets and juice at the end).
If you offer any support, big or small, to the Friends of Scholes Primary group, please contact the school office.
Geography fieldwork – not on the field!
We had an exciting afternoon on Tuesday this week doing some field work in our locality. All classes went on a walk along Station Road identifying trees and counting how many were on our route. The variation of trees was not as wide as on our school field but the trees were much bigger. We looked carefully at a map to mark our route, the trees and a landmark (the shop).
Help at home by looking at the leaves, seeds or berries on different trees and trying to identify them. The Woodland Trust have some ways to help on their website. This guide could also help.
Science – taste
In Science, KS1 have been looking at the 5 sense. This week the sense we focussed on was taste. During this week’s Science lesson, we tasted 3 different pieces of food. We smelled the food first because we know that our sense of smell links to our taste buds.
After we tasted the food we described it in our books. We decided:
- lemon is sour
- dark chocolate is bitter
- crisps are salty
- biscuits are sweet
We had a lot of fun in this lesson.
Tom Palmer local events
This year, some children at school attended an online workshop with author Tom Palmer. Tom Palmer has been in touch to let us know about some local events he is attending in half term.

Living and Learning – Democracy
This week we are learning about democracy and what that means for us and for others. We know that grown ups have a democratic vote to choose who they want to lead the country in a fair way. During a vote, everyone gets the opportunity to have their say and the majority of votes will decide who or what the winner is. School will be holding a democratic vote for the new members of the JLT this week. In class, we practised by voting for a story to share. The book with the most votes was read and shared with everyone.
Geography in 1,2B – fieldwork
We carried out some fieldwork as part of our geography topic this week.
We identified and counted trees on our school field.
We also returned to 1372 conkers we collected by throwing them into the bushes. The squirrels will now have plenty of food and we hope maybe some will become trees too!
Help at home by looking at the leaves, seeds or berries on different trees and trying to identify them. The Woodland Trust have some ways to help on their website. This guide could also help.
Geography – field work in 2C
On Tuesday this week, 2C did some fieldwork during our Geography lesson. We know that fieldwork means to work outside of the classroom and we go out and find the answer to some questions. Our questions were:
- Is there a ‘conker’ tree on the field?
- Are there any mushrooms growing?
- How many acorns can we find?
We also looked around the field and identified different trees based on their leaves. We found lots and lots of different types of trees including: birch, ash, oak and lime trees. We also counted the trees that are on our school field. We counted 34 trees in total!
Living and Learning – respect
Over the past few weeks we have been discussing respect in school and what it looks like. Last week we discussed how we can respect others at home, school and at clubs. We watched a video about a girl that respects her family in several ways such as:
- sharing and taking turns with her sister
- giving her Mum space when she needs it
- saying kind words about others
This week, the focus has been on how we respect ourselves. We compared ourselves to others by walking around the room and chatting to each other about what was the same and what was different about one another. We respect each others differences and know that we are all different.
We also know that in order to respect ourselves we should:
- keep our bodies clean
- eat healthily and exercise
- work hard, but equally not be too hard on ourselves
- give ourselves a break where we need it
Geography – Never Eat Shredded Wheat!
This week KS1 have been learning about 4 points on a compass; North, East, South and West.
We came up with a few rhymes to remember each of the points on the compass.
We like ‘Never Eat Silly Worms’ the best!
We had some brilliant discussions about compasses, how they work and how they help us with directions. We even labelled our classrooms with each compass point. During the lesson, each class went out onto the KS2 playground to ‘hunt’ for the compass. Once we found it we discussed where each arrow pointed to. We played some games so that the children had the chance to practise which direction each letter on the compass points to.
See some of our photographs below!
