PE with Joe Wicks

Posted on Saturday 21 March 2020 by Mrs Latham

Some classes have used Joe Wicks workouts in their PE lessons recently and he has sent a message for you all.

Starting Monday 23rd March I’m going to be hosting a free workout aimed at kids LIVE on my YouTube channel.

With the schools closed and with us all spending more time at home, it’s more important than ever that we keep moving and stay healthy and positive.

Exercise is an amazing tool to help us feel happier, more energised, and more optimistic.

The workouts will be fun and suitable for all ages and even adults can get involved.

You don’t need any equipment, just tune in to my YouTube channel at 9am each morning for a 30-minute, fun workout.

One more thing! I really need your help to spread this message. So please please share this with everyone that might like to get involved, and together we can help keep the nation moving 🙏🏻

This week, we received our free sports kit from the ALDI sticker collecting we did last year. We collected two posters worth, so got two bags! We look forward getting sporty with them in the not too distant future.

We joined in with Sport Relief again today. Each class completed their own sport challenges – trying to improve personal best scores in skipping, basketball, running and football. Thank you for all the donations to this charity.

Living and Learning – Keeping bugs and germs at bay!

Posted on Friday 13 March 2020 by Reception team

Professor Myers came to visit and did a couple of Science experiments with the children to show how important hand washing is. The children put their hands in glitter (to represent the germs) and had to wash their hands with soap and water to get rid of the ‘germs’. This was a great way to learn how important it is to take our time when washing our hands.

For the second experiment the children all touched a piece of bread which was then placed in a sealed bag. A second piece of bread was put in a sealed bag without anyone touching it.  We left it for a few days to see what would happen. We asked the children to predict what they think will happen to the bread. They replied with lots of different answers.

“I think it might turn mouldy.”

“Germs will be on it.”

“Go all green…like your hair (Professor Myers hair).”

We are still waiting to find out the results.

The children have also enjoyed cleaning the ‘crocodiles teeth’. This promoted a lot of discussion around why it is important to brush your teeth.

Home-link – 3 challenge cubes.

Can your child tell you why it is important to wash their hands, brush their teeth and cover their mouth when coughing?

Living and Learning – Keeping bugs and germs at bay

Posted on Monday 09 March 2020 by Reception team

The children our enjoying our mini topic about germs, hygiene and keeping bugs at bay!

Over the next couple of weeks the children will be involved in various activities which aims to explore and promote discussions about staying healthy.

Wiz sent the Writing Warriors a special mission all about keeping germs at bay. The Writing Warriors shared what they had learnt with their peers. They taught us all to do ‘the vampire sneeze’ to stop germs from spreading.

We talked about the importance of washing our hands with soap and water. When washing our hands the children sing happy birthday – once while rubbing the soap into their hands and again when rinsing the soap off. The song that they sing is below:

Happy birthday to my thumbs (clean thumbs), happy birthday to my fingers (clean between fingers), happy birthday to the bottoms (rub hands together), happy birthday to the tops (rub the tops of hands together).

The Writing Warriors also shared some instructions on how to wash our hands properly. We have put these up in the cloakroom to remind us of the 5 steps to clean our hands.

Home-link – 3 challenge cubes.

Can your child tell you why it is important to wash their hands? Can they tell you when they should wash their hands?

Thank you for helping us help Sport Relief

We started our Sport Relief fundraising a week early because we were expecting BBC Look North coming to launch the Big Summit Sofa challenge. Unfortunately, we were let down and they postponed the event at the last minute last night. We are resilient and resourceful at Scholes though and were determined to make it a happy and healthy day anyway. We completed nearly an hour of Wake Up Shake Up routines and raised £219.24 for Sport Relief. Thank you to everyone who sent contributions in and to the people who came to watch and support us!

POSTPONED – Big Sofa Summit for Sport Relief 6 March

Posted on Thursday 05 March 2020 by Mrs Latham

We have had a message from the BBC tonight saying,

We have taken the difficult decision to postpone the Big Summit Sofa Challenge until later in the year. Our role is to deliver our audience the best possible coverage and to do that we need every member of our team on duty.

We are all so disappointed but we will still be dressing in our sports kits and raising money for Sport Relief by doing an extended Wake Up Shake Up dance-athon session as one of our sports challenges. Feel free to come and watch from 9am.

Support the Big Summit Sofa Challenge for Sport Relief – Friday 6 March

Posted on Tuesday 03 March 2020 by Mrs Latham

The excitement is building for the launch of the Big Summit Sofa Challenge that the Look North presenters are doing for Sport Relief 2020.  The starting point this year is our school, Scholes (Elmet) Primary! Harry Gration, Amy Garcia and Paul Hudson from BBC Look North will join in with Wake Up Shake Up as their warm-up at 9.30am.

Each class is planning their own sports challenge and children are invited to come to school in their sports kit, in exchange for a contribution to Sport Relief.

The BBC television cameras will also be in school to film us and talk to as many people as they can – some may even feature on the news that night.

They have asked that we encourage as many parents, family and friends to stay after they have dropped children off in the morning, so please feel free to show your support and join in with the fun!
See you on Friday!

What is ‘GLD’?

Posted on Thursday 27 February 2020 by Reception team

Thank you to those of you who attended the meeting about ‘GLD’ (good level of development) on Tuesday 25 February. We hope you found the information  useful in continuing to support your child on their exciting learning journey.

As we quickly continue our journey through phonics many parents have asked for more information to help understand what their child is learning in school. For example, understanding what a digraph and trigraph is. Here are some websites that may be useful.
