Peace Flame in Scholes

Posted on Tuesday 13 September 2022 by Mrs Hogarth

Scholes will be celebrating The United Nations International Day of Peace on Saturday 17th September in the Peace Flame Garden at 11am. The children in year 5/6 were asked to create a banner to celebrate this special occasion. The theme needed to incorporate the end of racism. The children used an outline of their hands and added positive messages and images about the importance of ending racism. The banner will be displayed in the garden this week – go along and see if you can spot your child’s hand. The banner looks amazing and will look great in Scholes, showing the school’s commitment to our local community.

History topic – The Great Fire of London

Posted on Monday 12 September 2022 by Mrs Latham

We have started our topic and we are learning all about The Great Fire of London. We are using a book, Vlad and the Great Fire of London, to stimulate our learning. (This is a YouTube link. Top tip for watching YouTube with your child: go to the settings cog along the play bar and turn off autoplay – this avoids an inappropriate clip coming up automatically, and helps to discourage your child from passively watching clip after clip.)

We have started by talking about the topic vocabulary, which you can see below. Help your child at home by exploring the information on the BBC bitesize website.

First week

Posted on Friday 09 September 2022 by Mrs Latham

We’ve had a fabulous first week in Key Stage 1. There were a few nerves (from adults and children alike) but once we got back into the swing of things, it was all ok! Thank you for sending your children looking so smart in their uniform, following our uniform policy.

We have become familiar with our new classrooms, met the adults who work there, enjoyed the new playground area, started learning in new books and done Wake Up Shake Up (WUSU) and PE.

Swimming starts next week. 2C on Tuesday, 1A on Thursday and 1,2B on Friday.

Ferdie and Fern have been busy…

Posted on Friday 09 September 2022 by Reception Team

We’ve had a great week meeting some of our new children during their home visits. It was lovely to find out a little bit about you all and we’re looking forward to getting to know you more when we welcome you to Nursery next week.

Nursery is looking fantastic; there are lots of exciting areas to play in and we can’t wait to show you our new playground.  Our Nursery foxes, Ferdie and Fern, are looking forward to having some more friends to play with.  As you can see from the photos, they’ve already been busy testing out some of our toys, playing in the fairy garden and sliding down the slide!

Ferdie and Mrs Beesley loved using the diggers and crane in the  construction small world area.

Mrs Long helped a fairy to whizz down the slide in the fairy garden with Fern the Fox.

Mrs Kilburn told Fern all about her holiday to the seaside as she built a sandcastle in the Sunshine Room.

Lots of you told us that you love to read ‘The Gruffalo’ when we visited you this week. Ferdie enjoyed listening to the story with Miss Thomas in the book corner.

It’s not just the fairies that like slides; Miss Morris and Fern loved testing out our new climbing frame and slide. Whhhhheeeeeeeeee!

Mrs Gosper has really missed singing and playing with the Nursery instruments in the holidays. She couldn’t wait to make some noise in the Nursery garden!

Here are a few reminders of some of the things that we talked about at our home visits.

  • Please bring a full change of clothes in a drawstring bag and a pair of wellies that will stay in Nursery. Remember to write your child’s name on EVERYTHING!
  • Children need to bring a water bottled (named) to Nursery. Please put it in your child’s coloured basket in the morning and collect it at the end of the day to be washed.
  • Please return your ‘All about me’ information sheets next week and bring proof of your child’s date of birth, if we didn’t see it at your home visit.

Have a great weekend and we’ll look forward to seeing you next week.

A great start to the school year!

The week that was

Posted on Friday 09 September 2022 by Mr Roundtree

What an amazing first week class 5/6A have had!   I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of the pupils in class this week; in turn we have shared some amazing stories from our summer holidays.

We’ve begun reading our new class text, “Secrets of the Sun King“; gone back in time to explore how the Stone Age civilisation made tools and provided for themselves; investigated how we can classify living organisms using Carl Linnaeus’ system; and scored goals in handball!                        Pupils have been issued with new reading records this week and brought home a new book. Help your child to get the term off to a flying start by encouraging reading for at least 15 minutes per day and recording this in their diary.  Our times table focus for homework is our 2s, 5s and 10s. Remember your PE kit for Monday and Wednesday afternoons!

Finally, our certificate winners for this week are…

For great learning…

Luella – really demonstrating our school rule of respect to others when working in class, and producing some excellent handwriting and grammar work. Well done.

For sport and physical activity…

Millie – for showing skill and enthusiasm during our handball sessions. You showed superb defensive skills and teamwork. Well done.

For living and learning…

Alex – You had a really mature attitude when discussing the importance of rules, and respecting the opinions of others. Well done!

Reading: Book club in 3.4

Posted on Friday 09 September 2022 by Mr Roundtree

Welcome to Autumn term!

We’ve quickly got into the swing of things and are ready to go with our home reading.

As you know, building a love of reading in your child by reading aloud at home strengthens their language, vocabulary and comprehension skills, and improves their social skills and confidence as you listen to them read.

You’ll have noticed Reading Records and reading books coming home in school bags, and/or assigned an ebook. Please get in touch with your child’s class teacher if this isn’t the case.

At Scholes, children are required to read at home every day for 15 minutes. We ask that a reading activity is completed at home just once a week, brought into school on their Book Club days and signed by parents. The children will be directed which activity to complete each week.

Book club days:

3/4A – Wednesday

3/4B – Wednesday

3/4C – Thursday

You can help by making time for reading practice at home.
  1. Make a special reading spot.
  2. Let reading be a special part of every day.
  3. Ask questions. As you read together, ask questions about the book to build comprehension skills.
  4. Make time for mistakes.
  5. Re-read favourite books.
  6. Read for fun.

Science: classifying living things

Posted on Thursday 08 September 2022 by Mrs Hogarth

This week, we have been learning about Carl Linnaeus – a Swedish naturalist and explorer who was the first to create a system to define species of organisms by name. We worked together to create our own classification keys that would allow us to sort, classify and identify objects from around the classroom. This was based on the physical characteristics of the objects. We found it quite hard to think of questions that would allow us to sort the objects effectively, but we got there eventually. We also applied some great scientific vocabulary.

Welcome to Class 5/6A

Posted on Tuesday 06 September 2022 by Mr Roundtree

A very warm welcome back to all pupils in Class 5/6A.  We have had a fantastic day getting to know our new classmates, as well as catching up on everyone’s holiday stories.  It seems Class 5/6A were very well travelled over the summer!   There has been lots of information passed onto the children today, reinforcing our school rules and values, uniform policy, homework and reading records.  Please note that P.E. lessons will take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.

All pupils have today chosen a new reading book from the library and brought this home with them.  Really get this new school year off to a great start by reading daily at home with your child, and recording this in their reading record.  Children are to bring their reading records in to school every Friday.

I look forward to getting to know the pupils more over the coming days and weeks, as well as the parents.  Please do stop by and say hello, or ask me any questions you may have.
