1A-A lot of learning!

Posted on Friday 17 November 2023 by Mrs Wilkins

We too have been following our excellent curriculum and learning about M

materials in Science. Here we identified different materials and discussed some of their properties.

Our rocks were closely inspected, organised and sorted into different groups. The children were really trying to grasp the concept of dull, shiny, rough and smooth.

Help at home- by sorting household objects by material (plastic, wood, metal, glass).

In Art, we were comparing and contrasting the work by Leonardo Di Vinci and Paul Klee. We also articulated our likes and dislikes about their work.

Leonardo’s work is more realistic- William

I like Paul Klee because his paintings are colourful-Mollie

Library- To encourage a love for reading, all of KS1 visit our school library on a Friday. Here are some book worms.

Help at home-by reading with your child daily. Ensure children read their homework ebook and write a comment in their reading records by each Friday. If your child comes home with extra word and sound cards please be diligent and help your child to learn them.

AUTHOR VISIT-We had a very exciting virtual visit with the author James Mayhew. We know him so well for his series of books based on his sister Katie.

James shared with us how he begun to draw and paint as a child and this developed into writing also. As we watched James he, cleverly, illustrated a picture whilst telling us a story. James allowed us to ask questions. We were impressed by the fact that he has had over 70 books published! He also writes about 2 books a year!

Finally, we have all enjoyed our non-uniform day to support Children In Need. KS1 have been happy in a sea of yellow, ears, spots and trainers. Thankyou for all of you donations for this incredible charity.

World Nursery Rhyme Week

Posted on Friday 17 November 2023 by Reception Team

Has your child been singing lots of Nursery rhymes at home this week? As it’s World Nursery Rhyme Week, we’ve been singing even more rhymes than usual!

Singing Nursery rhymes is a very important part of daily life in Nursery. There is a wealth of evidence to suggest that young children who regularly sing nursery rhymes, will go on to develop a love of literacy and language and will become confident readers

.

We loved playing with the sticky jelly in the sensory area and had great fun making it wobble as we sang ‘Jelly on a plate‘.

Here are some of the rhymes that we’re learning to sing:

Help at home: Listen to these Nursery rhymes and sing them together at home. Does your child have a different favourite rhyme? Let us know or send us an e-mail to scholesnursery@spherefederation.org

Outside, children continue to enjoy collecting leaves. They worked together to sweep them into a pile and took turns to use the sweeping brush. It was a great way to strengthen their upper arm muscles!

The rabbit shaped construction toys have been very popular. Children used their imaginations to make all sorts of creations and tall towers. We also enjoyed splashing in the water whilst singing one of our favourite number rhymes, 5 Little Ducks.

Next week’s learning:

Next week, we’re going to read ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy.  In the story Mr Bear hears lots of sounds in his house and he can’t get to sleep. We’ll continue with our Phase 1 phonics learning, listening for environmental sounds around us and we’ll talk about ‘night time’.

Nursery rhyme of the week – 1,2,3,4,5, Once I caught a fish alive

Each Peach Pear Plum

Posted on Friday 17 November 2023 by Reception Team

Nursery Rhyme Week

In literacy, we read the story Each Peach Pear Plum.

It was a very engaging book and the children loved spotting the different characters on each page.

Check out our super writing!

We also explored household objects from the past. Asking questions to learn about objects we had never seen before. We were then able to compare these to objects we might have at home.

What objects from the past can you spot in the picture?

Compare these objects with the ones in your home.

Odd Socks

On Monday, we all wore our odd socks. This was to celebrate our differences and share the message that we are all different in some way.

Stay and Learn

On Wednesday, we had a wonderful morning exploring maths with our adults.

Thank you to all the adults that were able to join us and join in with lots of maths activities.

It was great to receive your valuable feedback.

Very helpful to know how to help at home.

Wonderful to come to school and get involved in the learning with my child.

Great learning how we can help with their maths.

It was very informative and helpful.

Music

This week in music, the children listened and danced to Boogie Wonderland.

After, they were asked…

How did you feel?

Happy!

It feels like a disco.

I was proud.

I felt like I was in the song.

Excited!

Poetry Picnic

Each week we will be learning a new poem. We will recite this poem each day. By saying the poem out loud, we can focus on the sounds and rhythm of each word or line. We talk to the children about how this can help us become better readers. This week’s poem is called A Basket of Apples.

Other learning

This week we have explored lots of nursery rhyme themed activities in our classroom.

Living & Learning – Anti-Bullying Week

Posted on Friday 17 November 2023 by Nicole Iveson

Anti-Bullying Week 2023 is coordinated in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by the Anti-Bullying Alliance. This year it has the theme ‘Make A Noise About Bullying’ and took place from Monday 13th to Friday 17th November. The week kicked off with Odd Socks Day on Monday 13th November, where adults and children wore odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique.

The theme this year was ‘Make A Noise About Bullying’ and came about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance . Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.

On Monday afternoon we came off our usual timetable to learn about what bullying is, the effects of bullying and how we can put a stop to it. We are really clear on the acronyms for bullying below:

What is bullying –
Several
Times
On
Purpose

How can we stop bullying –
Start
Telling
Other
People

At home you could ask your child if they can tell you the two acronyms for bullying and what they are!

Art – topic learning

Posted on Thursday 16 November 2023 by Mrs Latham

We are really enjoying our art topic – learning about the work of Paul Klee and Leonardo da Vinci. We have looked closely at their paintings and found similarities and differences. We are learning to share our opinions about the colours, shapes and patterns they use.

REMEMBER our school trip to The Hepworth Wakefield gallery is next Tuesday, 21 November.

Living and Learning – Me and my money

Posted on Thursday 16 November 2023 by Mrs Latham

Our themed week was last week but visitors from HSBC couldn’t come last week. They came to talk to the year 1 and 2 classes about how trade, bartering and money has changed over time. They also talked to us about the value of notes.

Help at home by identifying and sorting coins and notes. Make different amounts in a variety of ways. How many ways can you make 10p?

Science – you rock!

Posted on Thursday 16 November 2023 by Miss Young

This week in Science, Ks1 are looking at a variety of rocks. We know that rocks can be found in many different places and that rocks have many different properties.

We used words like rough, smooth, heavy and light to describe the rocks and created some posters on our tables.

We handled the rocks to feel their texture. We also organised them in a few different ways. This helped us to sort and classify.

We sorted the rocks from smallest to biggest and lightest (colour) to darkest in 2C.

PE – gymnastics

Posted on Thursday 16 November 2023 by Mrs Latham

Year 1 and 2 are doing gymnastics in our PE lessons this half term. We’ll learn different ways of moving (high, low, jumps), gymnastic positions (tuck, pike, straddle) and sequencing movements. We will also be using the large apparatus. Below are some pictures of 1,2B’s gymnastic lessons.

Awesome adjective day!

Posted on Tuesday 14 November 2023 by Mrs Latham

We had a fabulous day learning about word classes today and, in particular, adjectives.

We all dressed up as an adjective, learnt a song about adjectives and made some interesting expanded noun phrases.

Help at home by talking about your favourite adjectives. Mrs Latham’s is discombobulated, Mr Goodwin’s is fabulous, Mrs Brown’s is bulbous and Miss Young’s is flabbergasted!
