Fiddly Fingers Stay and Play

Posted on Sunday 18 November 2018 by Reception team

Thank you to all those that came along to the fiddly fingers stay and play. We hope you enjoyed the session and came away with lots of ideas on how to support your child’s physical development in terms of their fine motor skills at home.

The next stay and play will be Funky Phonics on Tuesday 04 December.

Investigating Perimeter

Posted on Sunday 18 November 2018 by Mrs Allaway

Y4 children have been investigating the perimeter of  different patio designs made with 10 square patio slabs. In each design, the slabs had to be placed edge to edge and ‘holes’ in the patio weren’t allowed.

Using tiles to represent the patio slabs, they made models of their designs and then drew them.  They made predictions about what they thought the shortest and the longest perimeter would be.

Connor: “I notice that all the perimeters are even numbers. We can’t find one with a perimeter that’s odd. I’m not sure why yet.”

Seth: “We’ve found four different designs that give the longest perimeter. We think there are even more.”

Ask your child to tell you about the shortest and longest perimeters they were able to make and what types of designs generated these.

Lots of children were keen to continue the investigation at home. You could work together to find different ways to make the longest perimeter.

Streetlife Museum in Hull

Posted on Saturday 17 November 2018 by

Year 3 and 4 had a fantastic day at the Streetlife Museum, in Hull, on Wednesday. The children loved the chance to see and climb on lots of modes of transport through time.

We also had time to visit the East Riding Museum, which is across the courtyard. More than 200 million years of history is brought to life. The displays were fantastic and very accessible for the children.

We’ll be using our new knowledge to write a recount about our experience. There’s been so many amazing sights today that it may be difficult to narrow it down!

Ball fun – physical activity

Posted on Saturday 17 November 2018 by Mrs Latham

We love being physically active in key stage 1, ensuring we get at least 30 active minutes every day. The new ball chute on our playground will make this even easier! The children loved trying it out on Friday in PE and also at playtime and lunchtime.

Run, run as fast as you can…

Posted on Friday 16 November 2018 by Reception Team

Children loved listening to The Gingerbread Man story this week and quickly began to join in with the repeated refrains in the story. We re-told the story outside and enjoyed baking our own gingerbread people at the beginning of the week. In maths, we practised lots of important counting skills when putting the buttons on our ginger bread people.

One of the highlights of the week had to be investigating what would happen to the Gingerbread Man if he got wet in the river. The children were fascinated watching as the gingerbread ‘melted’ (we talked about melting and dissolving) in the water.

Living and Learning – I know how to STOP bullying

Posted on Friday 16 November 2018 by Mr Roundtree

This week’s Anti-bullying theme has been Choose Respect. We have been very busy doing a range of activities to support our understanding and learning about this important Living and Learning statement.

In reading, we watched a video and answered RIC questions.

We discussed what respect means and how do we show it.

We also discussed bullying, the different types and what to do if you feel that you are being bullied.

  • Our definition of bullying (‘Bullying is when you hurt someone, physically or emotionally, several times on purpose.’)
  • Types of bullying – cyber-bullying and prejudice-based bullying related to gender, race, religion and belief, special educational need and disability.
  • If you experience bullying, the key message is to tell someone (start telling other people)
  • STOP can stand for two key messages: the definition (Several Times On Purpose) and the solution (Start Telling Other People).

Staying safe near transport

Posted on Tuesday 13 November 2018 by Mr Roundtree

As part of our Time Travel topic, Year 3/4 children have been studying transport, in particular the dangers of crossing a road and ways to stay safe. On Monday, our lollipop lady, Sue, kindly came and talked to us about how to stay safe when crossing the road. In English, we read all about the Green Cross Code and put it in to practice right outside our school. We did a great job of staying very safe! Why not ask your children about the six steps to stay safe when crossing a road.
