Science – being chemists

This half term, we’ve been chemists. We’ve been learning about materials, their properties and which material is used for what and why.

This week we tested the absorbency of different materials.

We learnt that,

Absorb means when a liquid is taken in my a material.

We predicted, then tested, the absorbency of a tissue, kitchen roll, paper and a plastic bag. Some materials absorbed quicker than others but the plastic didn’t absorb the water at all.

Help at home by finding absorbent material in your home.

1,2B trip to the Hepworth Art Gallery

We had great school trip to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield.

We took part in a print-making workshop which included looking at some Barbara Hepworth sculptures and finding inspiration from their shapes. There were some great outcomes and the children enjoyed seeing all their masterpieces.

We also spent time looking around the garden, the different galleries and sketching some of the sculptures. There were a variety of pieces of art and sculptures to see with different textures, shapes and colours. We even got to see the brand new exhibition that opened last week.

Design and Technology (Food) – 2C

We completed our DT Food learning for this term this week. This is part of our curriculum and the children will be making two further recipes over the course of the year. We made banana sandwiches using peeling, cutting, slicing, spreading and sprinkling skills.

Help at home by encouraging your child to join in with the preparation or cooking of food.

Reading and writing

This half term, KS1 are reading ‘Not Now, Bernard’ by David McKee. Before reading the book, we had a good look at the front cover and made a few inferences based on the pictures. We had a discussion about what the book might be about before reading it. We used clues on the front cover to help us with this. We’re then using it to write descriptions using adjectives. We’ll write them about the monster in the book and our own invented monsters too.

The monster has sharp, pointy teeth. He is huge and purple. He is loud and scary.

Help at home by reading every night to your child. It is fine (and beneficial) to read and re-read books many times.

Reading – Michael Rosen Day

We enjoyed an online meeting with Michael Rosen today. The children were absolutely enchanted by him reading poems and telling stories. Listen to more of his work here(This is a YouTube link. Top tip for watching YouTube with your child: go to the settings cog along the play bar and turn off autoplay – this avoids an inappropriate clip coming up automatically, and helps to discourage your child from passively watching clip after clip.)

Amazing Adjective Day

We literally became words yesterday for adjective day. Thank you for the ingenious costumes. We were sleepy, cosy, explosive, sparkly, glistening, sporty and adventurous to name but a few.

We learnt this song about adjectives to help us remember what they are.

Adjectives can tell you more,

About a noun and that’s for sure

AD-JEC-TIVES!

Help at home by using interesting adjectives when talking to your child.

Living and learning : democracy (voting for our class JLT representative)

This week’s Living and Learning lessons have all been about democracy. Children presented a speech if they decided they wanted to represent their class on the Junior Leadership Team (JLT). Then, we voted in the hall by putting our votes in a ballot box. We announced the winners in the Golden Assembly on Friday.
